Transformations was created as a charity gala designed to support not-for-profit charities in our local community. The motivation that started this event, and continues today, is to embrace the diversity that Lawrence, Kansas is known for — coming together to support the needs of ALL people in its community.
At this red carpet event, local women are chosen and compete on behalf of a local charity of their choice. The competition includes real pageant components such as evening gown, talent, and on-stage questions. This fun-filled event, however, has a twist! Each competitor is paired with a female impersonator. The female impersonator (or “consultant,” if you will) assists in “transforming” their assigned competitor.
The consultants, along with the show’s host, Deja Brooks, start the competition with a fabulous opening number followed by pageant categories, allowing competitors to showcase their “transformed” beauty and talents. A panel of five judges scores the evening’s events. By this years event, Transformations will have brought increased awareness to 38 different charitable organizations within Lawrence and Douglas County. It also provides an opportunity for local businesses to partner with and be publicly recognized for supporting, strengthening and bolstering all charities involved.
The 2017 charitable organizations include:
- Basic Needs
- Friends of Hidden Valley, Inc.
- One Hundred Good Women
- Lawrence Humane Society
- The Sexual Trauma & Abuse Care Center
- Visiting Nurses Hospice
- Trinity In Home Care
- Theatre Lawrence
- DCCCA First Step at Lakewood
- Symbiotic Behavioral Treatment Center
- Just Food
- Ballard Community Center
- The Preston Scheibler Memorial Scholarship Fund
