Nataanii Means

Oglala Lakota/Omaha/Navajo hip-hop artist

Nataanii Means, Oglala Lakota/Omaha/ Navajo hip-hop artist and son of prominent American Indian activist Russell Means, first began making music in 2009 and has since been championing indigenous issues with his music. He was raised on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Arizona, and then studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

His debut album in 2013, 2 Worlds, is an ode to the double life that contemporary American Indians must navigate and features Sicangu Lakota hip-hop artist Frank Waln on the track “Real Skinz.” He has been featured on MTV’s Rebel Music: Native America and released his second album, Balance, in 2018. Means is part of a growing movement of hip-hop artists using their rhymes to speak to the realities facing native communities, as well as be a voice to uplift and empower.
