Three-time Grammy-nominated Afro-Caribbean music group Tiempo Libre is celebrated for their sophisticated tropical music with an exhilarating mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythm. Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, the group members are equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs, festival stages and dance venues.
Tiempo Libre has been featured on television shows, including The Tonight Show, Live from Lincoln Center and Dancing with the Stars, among others, and they have appeared in concert around the globe, including performances at Tanglewood, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Hong Kong’s Kwai Tsing Theatre and the Tuscan Sun Festival in Cortona, Italy. The band has also collaborated with classical violinist Joshua Bell and frequently plays with leading orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra and the San Francisco and Houston symphonies. The group’s 2009 Grammy-nominated album, Bach in Havana, features tracks with Paquito D’Rivera and Yosvany Terry. The album, a fusion of Bach with Afro-Cuban rhythms, reflects the duality of their childhood days studying classical music, and nights, spent playing traditional Cuban music.
Tiempo Libre will perform with the KU Symphony Orchestra (KUSO) in a program uniting Latin and classical music. KUSO is the premier orchestral organization at the KU School of Music led by award-winning conductor Carolyn Watson, director of orchestral activities.
This event is presented in partnership with KU’s Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
