Trombonist Elliot Mason, born in England, began trumpet lessons with his father at age four. At age seven, he was struck with an overwhelming curiosity in his father’s trombone, and young Mason soon switched his focus from the trumpet. As an 11-year-old, he was already performing as a trombonist in dance halls, theaters, clubs and pubs, covering all styles of music but concentrating primarily on jazz and improvisation. At 15, he won the national Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Soloist Award (under 25) and was featured at John Dankworth’s Wavendon Jazz School. At age 16, Mason left England to join his brother at the Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts on a full tuition scholarship, where he met and studied with Hal Crook and Phil Wilson, among others. After graduating from Berklee in 1996 (age 19), Mason moved to New York City, where he distinguished himself as a respected and highly in-demand trombone and bass-trumpet player.
In 2007, Mason was invited to become a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO). While continuing to perform with the JLCO, he co-leads the Mason Brothers Quintet with his brother Brad, and he is an instrumental part of the Sofijazz Quintet. In 2016, he was asked to join the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music as their jazz trombone professor/studio class facilitator.
Elliot Mason is endorsed by B.A.C. musical instruments and is currently playing on his own signature series line of custom trombones that he helped design.
“Elliot’s unbelievable as a trombonist… there’s unworldly facility, virtuosity and clarity in his playing. He can sing a melody out from the trombone; it’s like a human voice the way he plays it.” – Wynton Marsalis
