25+ Year Partnership with USD 497—Beyond the Stage
The Lied Center is proud to partner with Lawrence Public Schools in providing free arts experiences to all students in the district each year. From school-only performances to Third Grade Theatre Arts Day to educator workshops and more, integrating the arts into the lives of the next generation is at the core of our mission.
In celebration of our 25-year partnership with Lawrence Public Schools, from 1994 to 2019, the Lied Center invited over 600 third and fourth grade students and their art teachers to participate in a unique and interactive art experience led by artist Carol Bradbury. The result—a visually stunning installation of four lobby column wraps that the artist evolved from students working and playing together. -
"They Called Her Vivaldi" school performance — Beyond the Stage
Theatre Lovett from Dublin, Ireland presented "They Called Her Vivaldi" at a school-only performance for 3rd-5th graders at the Lied Center of Kansas. This creative theatre piece, full of beautiful music, lyrical prose and hilarious characters, celebrates the power within us all to follow our dreams and overcome our fears. -
Mayhem Poets—Beyond the Stage
The Mayhem Poets are theatre-trained, comedically-gifted, lyrical virtuosos who seamlessly blend raw elements of hip hop, theatre, improv and stand-up comedy to tell gut-wrenching truths.
In the fall of 2021 they conducted a workshop with USD497 high school students, imparting ways to communicate important truths about the power of words and about human values. -
Amirah Sackett & MR MiC Virtual Residency—Beyond the Stage
Hip-hop dancer, choreographer and teacher Amirah Sackett and Ahmed Zaghbouni (aka MR MiC)—beatboxer, musician, voice impressionist and film director—spent a week as artists-in-residence at the Lied Center in the fall of 2020 engaging the community with virtual activities and events during the pandemic. -
Sonia De Los Santos—Beyond the Stage
In this school-only performance, Sonia De Los Santos performed Latin American family music for third to fifth grade students in USD 497. Her unique concert included songs, in English and Spanish, that reflects her experiences growing up in Mexico, moving to another country, learning about other cultures, and in the process, feeling closer to her own heritage. Messages of making joyful community music and building cultural bridges inspires children of all backgrounds. -
Keeping Faith: Sisters of Story—Beyond the Stage
Three storytellers—a Muslim woman, a Jewish woman and a Christian woman—share stories inspired by their personal journeys to show peace, curiosity and similarities amongst their faiths.
