The Lied Center of Kansas announced the 2022–23 season on Sunday, May 1, to the Friends of the Lied at the Season Announcement Party. The season has a wide variety of performances and genres, with award-winning national Broadway tours, Grammy winners, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, icons of classical music, trailblazing artists, family-friendly shows and much more.
A few highlights of the upcoming season, which kicks off in September, include The Beach Boys, Chanticleer, Mavis Staples, Black Violin as well as four national Broadway tours—Fiddler on the Roof, Hairspray, Anastasia and a show that will be announced on June 27, 2022. The Lied Center has also continued the Folk, Chamber Music and Just Friends Jazz Series’ performances in the intimate setting of the Lied Center Pavilion.
The season also brings the world premiere of a musical theatre work commissioned by the Lied Center, NORTH: The Musical, which follows a family’s journey through the Underground Railroad seeking freedom. Their route through the Louisiana bayous, the bustling city of New Orleans and the young town of Lawrence, Kansas, introduces the characters and audience members to the diverse, multifaceted lives of Black Americans during the 1850s.
“As we continue to heal collectively, experiencing a live performance is the perfect way to remind ourselves of humanity’s resilience. My deepest gratitude goes out to our Friends of the Lied, whose steadfast support over the last two years has made it possible for us to continue thriving in service to the University of Kansas and entire community,” said Derek Kwan, executive director of the Lied Center.
